Stock ticker

A stock ticker is a unique combination of letters assigned to a publicly-traded company's stock for trading purposes. 📊

Stock tickers, also known as ticker symbols or trading symbols, serve as a shorthand identifier for the company's shares on stock exchanges and trading platforms, making it easy for investors and traders to reference and track them.

Example: Apple Inc.'s stock ticker is "AAPL" on the NASDAQ stock exchange, while British Petroleum's stock ticker is "BP" on the London Stock Exchange.

Fun fact: The term "ticker" comes from the 19th-century ticker tape machines 🕰️ which printed stock quotes on a continuous strip of paper called a tape. As the tape moved, it made a ticking sound, leading to the name "ticker." Today, stock tickers are displayed electronically, but the name has stuck.
